Springer is the second mount you’ll get in Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire. It’s a giant rabbit that can jump really high and reduce your fall damage. In order to get it, you’ll need to upgrade the raptor’s skills several times, then follow to a certain region and do a favor for a springer breeder.
When I did the forward leap on raptor, the raptor descends slowly / glides down like a skimmer/glider. When I high jumped on springer, it descends slowly and can move in the air like it was a skimmer. Did not test on jackal and griffin. I quit the client and restated, and the issue no longer happ

No, you cannot skip learning canyon jumping to get the Springer. You -can- get across the gap by other means, but the heart will not show up until you have Canyon Jumping unlocked and learned.
These two factors make it extremely useful to gain height in places where the springer cant. As well as maintain height, which again, the springer(or griffon, the other flying mount) cant. The hover ability is also extremely useful for AFKing near a place where you are waiting for an event to spawn, or lossing agro so you can use waypoints.
Must be noted that Raptor and Springer mounts can be obtained in End of Dragons as well, but their mastery tracks can't be trained without Path of Fire . Each mount has its own unique set of abilities and characteristics; they also possess one offensive skill that, when used, dismounts the player.
